Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn

Loosduinen 1817 – 1897 The Hague

Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn was a pupil of the famous Andreas Schelfhout. Like his master, Kleijn specialised in summer and winter landscapes. Moreover, he made a number of pleasant river landscapes and beach scenes. Compared to other painters, Kleijn started his carrier as a professional artist quite late in life. At the age of 24, he settled in The Hague. From 1842, he exhibited regularly at the Exhibitions of Living Masters in The Hague and Amsterdam.

His charming landscapes are good examples of the Dutch Romantic movement. They were also greatly appreciated by international collectors. For example, the Russian Grand Duke Nikolai Michailovitsj acquired a river landscape by Lodewijk Johannes Kleijn.
