Horses and figures near the St. Michael’s Chapel, Xanten

Oil on panel  36.5 x 49.9 cm

Signed lower left

In this painting Verschuur painted his own version of the Chapel of St. Michael in Xanten, a historic town in the lower Rhine area in Germany. This gate was constructed in 1478 and leads from the famous St. Victor’s Cathedral to the marketplace in Xanten. Verschuur chose to leave the adjacent buildings out of the picture. During the Second World War the gate was destroyed and recontructed afterwards. These days, one may find a small concert hall in the St. Michael’s Chapel.
