A horse at a watering trough

Oil on panel  19.1 x 14.7 cm

Signed lower right

In this painting, a servant can be seen on horseback, on a farm. He has not yet taken the time to dismount and has led the horse directly to the water trough. Verschuur portrayed the strong muscles and tendons of the animal very accurately. On the left there is a woman beside the well. She has probably just drawn a bucket of water for the horse. The painting has beautiful colours with warm brown shades and fresh green tones. The effect of light also stands out. The servant with a red tunic, who is so characteristic of the paintings by Verschuur, is also present in this painting and provides a striking colour accent. As always in Verschuur’s work, the horse also remains the main figure in this painting.
